2020 One Little Word® – story

I wasn’t convinced that I would have a One Little Word® for 2020. I started listening for my word in October, and….crickets. I brainstormed possible words in December – pause, space, allow, choose, explore, create – all of which felt forced.

A week ago, on my drive to work, the word Story arrived. It may have been mentioned in a podcast, or may have just floated into my consciousness – I don’t even remember. I just now that I had the moment of “oh, right…that’s it.”

As a memory keeper, and documenter of all.the.things….story is not unfamiliar to me. In fact, before I chose Story as my word (or before it chose me…depending on how you choose to see that), I had already chosen a story-based approach to Project Life® for 2020. More on that soon.

As a Landmark graduate, it’s also not lost on me that story plays into each and every experience that we have. Here’s what happened…and here’s the story about what happened. (Landmark grads can picture their Forum leaders drawing those two big circles, right?)

And so, what do I want to invite, via Story, into my life this year?

*I want to honor the stories of our life. I’ll do that through scrapbooking, photography, blogging (maybe), and social media. For me, there’s something powerful in sharing our story.

*I want to be present to the stories that I tell myself. I’m the one who chooses the fairytale story vs the doomsday story. As cheesy as it sounds…I am the author of my own story. I want to be aware of how I’m telling that story, to myself and to others.

*I want to read stories. I like having a concrete goal related to my word. I had already set the goal of reading 49 books this year…so it’s simple to shift that to reading 49 stories.

*I want to create our story. Related to what I wrote above…I want to create our story. No matter what outside influences (drama) are happening, I want to always come back to creating a life that I love. That’s a pretty good story to tell, right?

*I want to hear your story. I will never stop being grateful for the tribe the supports us. I want to be really present for your stories. Let’s have coffee, linger over wine, text on a Tuesday, follow each other on IG…tell me your story. I’m here for it.

Welcome, story. I’m looking forward to spending the year with you.
