Hit the ground running

What exactly does that saying mean? I get the meaning, but what’s the literal source? Well, anyway, this is what I told myself last night. This is what I need to do this week – hit the ground running. We have a totally busy week, with meetings/open houses almost every night….which means that I need to leave the house on time to make it to work on time to enable me to leave on time so that I can make it to the meetings on time. And anyone who *really* knows me, knows that "on time" is not one of my finer attributes.

Along with the root of that saying, I’d also like to know why it is that in a house with 2 showers & 4 people, there can’t be some sort of rule about 2 people taking a shower a night and 2 people taking a shower in the morning…so that there’s ample hot water left for me to use instead of me being the 3rd person to take a shower in the morning and having to rush through lukewarm water. In order to hit the ground running, I need hot water. And hot coffee. It’s simple, really.

On Thursday, we have to divide & conquer our meetings – Rob has a coach’s meeting for Rec Basketball, and I have to accompany Hope to the High School Open House. Yes, you read that right. High School. As in, the place that my baby girl will go to next fall. That can’t be right, can it?? I remember seeing these schools with indoor hallways on TV shows & stuff when I was in high school and they looked so different…and now that’s the kind of school that Hope will go to. For anyone giving me a funny look through their computer right now, remember that I went to high school in CA, where it’s warm enough to change classes by going outside. And if I went to high school with you, and you’re still giving me that funny look, just be nice….it’s early.

So, I found a really cute idea for a family photo on Two Peas and I’m so totally excited that we’re going to do it for our Christmas Cards. And you’ll have to wait to see, but trust me, it’s going to be wicked cute. It would be even more wicked cute if I could find some BG Blitzen…but I’m patiently waiting for Jean’s order to come in, so I’ll just have to settle for non-Blitzen cute instead. That’s okay.

Off to my lukewarm shower. Off to figure out how to hit the ground running. Off to get some more coffee.

Happy Monday.

Happy Monday to you too! 🙂 Sounds like you have a crazy busy week. Maybe we can catch up some night past 8pm 🙂 I have to get Christmas cards done too… so maybe I should get moving with that huh? 🙂 I saw an awesome couch idea (seen it a couple of places actually) but I just dont think I could swing that… well..maybe I could? I dont know… not sure…. anyway, have a great one!

I’ve got a few sheets of spare Blitzen, and I just ordered more last night… do you want me to pop some in the mail for you? I’d be happy to do that. If I sent it Priority, you would have it by Wednesday.
Now, high school: I was so freaking out the year before Alyssa went to high school. I bawled my eyes out during the final 8th grade assembly because I didn’t think she was ready for HS. But now, in hindsight, I can see that she is so much happier in high school. She just loves it!
I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and we went outside to change classes too. We had the middle section part that the classrooms surrounded and there were tables and benches there (it was like a little park with trees and flowers)… very similar to how it looks on One Tree Hill, if that makes sense. Now days, they won’t even let the kids leave the building without a special pass or an adult accompanying them. Things have REALLY changed, that’s for sure.

Thanks to Google (a curious girl’s best friend), phrase.org.uk says that “hit the ground running”, Probably from a military origin. Soldiers are expected to land from parachutes or from helicopters and get straight into action. So I hope that helps.
By the way, I was going through my many boxes of papers this weekend (you know I have the Hungarian gypsy packrat gene) and found the Debater’s version of the Tweleve Days of Christmas. I have no idea how that has survived; high school, college, law school, and all the moves in between. I will email you a copy later this week. Ought to bring back memories (I’ll leave the determination of whether they are good or bad up to you).
