strike 3

The teachers in our town have voted to strike. There is a final "can we negotiate?" meeting tonight, but no one expects the strike to be called off. So, we’re supposed to put our kids on the bus Monday morning, but be prepared for them to come right home. sigh. We will spend the weekend preparing – making arrangements for the kids to hang out at other people’s houses, trying to get our heads around how long this strike might last, and putting together ad-hoc homeschooling plans. I worry about the impact that it will have on my kids. I worry, even more, on the impact that it will have on the kids who are already at a disadvantage…socially, academically, and in their home life. For the kids that might have slipped through the cracks anyway – that crack is about to become a chasm.

In other news, the For Sale sign is down at Hope’s Dad’s house. My guess (since he doesn’t tell me these things) is that they have decided to wait until spring. I’m relieved that Hope won’t have to shuttle between VA & here for a while. I’m relieved that they’ll be here when Caden is born…Hope was feeling so left out. One less thing to worry about for now.

Austin’s last home football game is tonight. I’ll give my new lens another try. The first roll that I took with it was a total waste. My fault, really…I think the wrong combination of zoom & film speed. Live & learn. The second roll was okay. I need to do some editing/cropping, then I’ll post some here. We’re not sure what will happen with school sports during the strike, so Hope’s school soccer season may be over. She can’t play this week due to her knee…bummer.

Oh, and thanks for the comments on the post about Rob. 🙂 I printed them out for him. Karen – my sister, not the other Karen & Karin that visit – he wants to know where your glowing comments are??

YIKES! What a nightmare for the students and for the parents. Things like this have lasting impact on all those involved. I hope this strike does not last more than a day or two – for the sake of the CHILDREN. I’m wishing you well with your backup plan. Good luck on that!

When is the government going to start putting education first? Instead of paying for more…studies to determine if a sunfish get drunker off tequila or gin…they should be paying teachers what professional athletes make. I feel your pain. If I were any closer to you, I’d certainly do everything I could to help out. If you want to read about how scary some school systems are, read anything by Johnathan Kozol. His books are eyeopening, heartbreaking, and frightening.

So they’re not calling in substitutes until the strike is over??? They’re just completely shutting down schools??? Wow!!! I think the last strike we had in our district there were subs in, and teachers just didn’t cross the picket lines. Luckily it was a year or two before I started teaching, but we’re going through negotiations this year, so hopefully it won’t come to that for us!!! Good luck with all of the planning, but I’m sure it will work out in the end.

Oh my! I am so sorry to hear that your teachers are going to strike. How horrible. I hope that it will only be for a very short time. How difficult for all those kids!
I’m glad Hope’s dad’s house may be off the market. Less to worry about right now.
