overheard

I wasn’t eavesdropping…I swear….just happened to be in my scrapbooking room without any music playing while Hope was in the family room on the phone. Overheard the greatest 8th grade girl conversation. It’s a tense week in 8th grade – basketball tryouts. Yesterday was the first day, and apparently one friend was worried that she isn’t going to make the A team. So, Hope & another friend called her w/3-way calling…and intervention, they called it…and talked through all the reasons why said friend WILL absolutely, totally, for sure, seriously, definitely make the A team. After that topic was more than covered, they moved on. Tidbits that I caught while I was NOT eavesdropping….

"No, I’m not going to wear a skirt tomorrow…R, will you wear a skirt so that B will get off my case?" nice way to transfer the peer pressure, eh?

"I don’t go to church because my parents are all different things" and by things, I’m sure she meant religions

"Why are you singing Have a Holly, Jolly Christmas?" LOL

"M was totally worrying about having a boyfriend, and I was, like, duh, it’s basketball tryouts week, I have enough to worry about." good priorities, girl

"I know, I was all hyper all day because of tryouts…I was, like, caffeinated or something." my kid thinks caffeinated is a condition

"She’s only nice to me in public. But my Mom is cool." anyone wanna guess who that’s about?

"Are you better now? R, you’re totally going to make it. I can feel it in my bones." love the caring in that

I’m sure it’s some cardinal Mom sin to post these things on my blog, but you won’t tell, right? Do you totally swear? Seriously? Like, for real?

Confession: one of my all time favorite things to do since becoming mother of teenagers is to overhear their conversations (read NOT eavesdropping). The things these kids talk about, and the way they address the “important” stuff has taught me a lot about my kids and about myself. I LOVE this entry. Good luck to Hope too! We are dealing with (gasp) cheerleading tryouts this week. It’s pretty tense around here too.

Caffinated is a condition. I know it is b/c when I don’t get any, look out! It sounds to me like you are doing a terrific job raising her.

So, like, your kid can’t read? Of course she can. She’s a diabolical 8th-grader, remember?
I’ve learned over the many years I’ve been using the Internet that NOTHING you post ever really goes away. I have 5 year-old articles from the TechTV website that are still “Google-able” – and TechTV no longer exists. There’s also a Quicktime somewhere of me and and co-worker (a guy) slow dancing to Spandau Ballet’s “True” – for an office talent show. We’re wearing cycling pants. Hey, if you’re going to shock the crowd at a San Francisco office talent show, you need two married, hetero guys slow dancing – at least!
She’s gonna find out. Oh yeah, she’s gonna find out.

I won’t tell you were evesdropping, but only if you double pinky-swear that you won’t blab to the guy in second period that I think he’s totally H-O-T!!!
LOL….I’d totally have done the same thing!
