let's read

#katreads – the catch up post

spoiler alert…I only read one of these books.

My indecision around blogging lingers, clearly! I can’t convince myself to give it up completely….and yet, I neglect this space on the regular. Jumping back in to talk about books b/c it’s a neutral subject…

What I’ve read lately…

June & July – slow reading months for me b/c we had 3 out of 4 kids at home, and a pretty steady turn of house-guests. I will trade that kind of love for books any day!

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone – LOVED this one. I’m a big fan of therapy, and general self-improvement, and this book gives a peek behind the curtain. It was also a great reminder that therapists are people first….

Inheritance – As a long time fan of Dani Shapiro, this book didn’t disappoint. It resonated in a deep way – I met my biological father when I was 15, and could relate to so much of what Dani struggled with.

August – during August, we adjusted to the Littles’ leaving, and frankly…tried to catch our breath. We’re in the midst of dealing with other peoples’ issues, and it’s a lot. More on that in another post (for real, I have a books’ worth of things to say)…

The Island of Sea Women – this was a work book club pick. I didn’t expect to like it, given that I typically despise historical fiction. Surprisingly, I didn’t hate it! The cultural view was fascinating, and the character development was rich.

Three Women – Meh. I expected more from this one, given the stellar reviews. It was just okay for me.

September – during this month, we started to sink back in to a quieter life. We also traveled quite a bit! Sometimes I read when I travel – and sometimes I catch up on sleep.

Ask Again, Yes – this was MY work book club choice…shocking to everyone that I chose fiction. I loved it. The characters were so well-developed, and the family dynamics were related in their complications. Looking forward to discussing with my co-workers at our Book Brunch next weekend!

The Reckless Oath We Made – I adored Bryn Greenwood”s writing in All the Ugly and Wonderful Things. This book is uncomfortable and intense, and just so good. I will admit that I resisted the chapters written in middle english at first…but then they made so much sense for the character that I felt like the language was a vital connection.

My first book of October is A Woman is No Man. Oh, and I’m also working my way through Living the Sutras before going on a Cancun yoga retreat with Amy (and Miss Barb!) in December.

What have you read lately?

I usually do not read non fiction, but a friend gave me a book her friend had written, and it was one of those autobiographies that said truth is stranger than fiction, the story of a Dutch man who opens the book as a party loving college student, then the Nazin invasion in Holland, smuggling spies into Holland, becoming the aide de camp to the queen of Holland by the time he is 29, flying mosquito bombers for the RAF, trying to smuggle arms into Java for some rebels…and more The guy lead an incredible life. Erik Hazelhoff, “In Pursuit of Life” You could find it on Kindle.
The other, a favorite, Louise Penny’s latest Inspector Gamache latest novel “A Better Man” The stories centered in a mythical small village in Quebec are always great, with a great cast of characters.
I also worked my way through “The Tatooist of Auschwitz” a grim true love sory.
