a day in the life : march 2018

I took on documenting A Day in the Life™ last Thursday. To be honest, at the end of the day, I felt like a memory keeping failure…very few photos, and completely stumped on how to capture an uneventful workday. Before starting this post tonight, I watched Ali’s video documentation of her day, and felt inspired to find the little details of my story. So, here goes…

Most (non-travel) mornings start the same – our alarm goes off, and one of us asks Alexa to start the coffee. That sounds simple, right? Not so much. In our half-awake state, we invariably phrase the request incorrectly, and have to argue with her until she understands. Total first world problems. We snuggle in bed, sometimes checking our phones, and sometimes dozing off a bit longer, until my phone chimes to tell us that the coffee is done. We get up…Dan heads to the kitchen to pour coffee (one scoop of collagen for me, 1/2 a scoop for him), while I fill the diffuser for the living room. We meet at our mediation altar. We sit, drink coffee, check in on how we each slept/how we’re doing, and then set a meditation timer for 11-13 minutes.

This month, my focus for One Little Word™ is a daily yoga practice. So, after we finished meditation, I chose a Yoga with Adriene video to follow. Morning yoga = no makeup, hair in need of a cut/color piled on my head, and comfy clothes.

Our morning routine + yoga took a lot of time, so I headed straight from my mat to the shower. Drugstore brands for the win.

Dan makes the coffee, I make the bed. That’s the deal. At a Buddhist retreat years ago, Karen Maezen Miller said “the state of your bed is the state of your head.” There have only been a handful of mornings where I haven’t made the bed since.

Breakfast & supplements before heading to work. We buy fresh eggs from a couple of co-workers, and it’s always fun to see how dark the yolks are going to be. On this day, I had a corn/wheat tortilla, 2 eggs, vegetarian bacon (Mr. Uptons), and arugula. Morning supplements include Ritual vitamins, Ashwaganda, Vitamin D, B-Complex, and L-5-MTHF.

It’s March, and we’ve had back-to-back Nor’Easters. Sigh.

I felt like there just wasn’t a lot about my workday to capture. I picked up sushi for lunch…strayed from my usual order (Rainbow Roll with sweet sauce) and got a Coconut Shrimp Tempura roll. I asked for avocado, and realized in the car that there wasn’t any. So bummed. The rest of my day was centered around product & customer follow up.

I did a lot of trend/marketplace research, and ended up ordering a couple of things from Sephora. A few more details about these photos…my ever-present water bottle (trying to increase my intake), a rare clearing on my desk, and two mugs (one for decaf coffee, one for tea). And yes, I stand. All day. I love my standing desk!

After work, I headed to a local restaurant to meet up with some Class of ’15 moms for drinks, apps, and friendship. Our boys graduated from high school together, and are now spread across the country (and in Canada!) for University. So great to catch up!

Reflections on this Day in the Life™ (which will also serve as reminders for next time) – I didn’t get Dan in any photos, mostly b/c I only saw him in the am. Next time, I’ll make a point of him to making an appearance. I was definitely thrown by not having a plan for daytime/work day documentation. I think that it would help to pre-plan with a checklist of stories that I could document, and might help to share my plans with my friends at work to remove the self-conscious aspect of taking pics. I really gave up after dinner. Capturing my bedtime routine would have been a nice contrast to my morning routine.

I’ll be adding these photos/details to my Project Life album – likely as an insert. Did you follow along with A Day in the Life? If so, I’d love to hear about your experience!
